Porto Colom is located on the east coast of Mallorca, approx. eight kilometres north of Cala d’Or. The town is named after Christopher Columbus, who was claimed to have been born in Porto Colom. However, there is not much proof to support this.
The beach in general
The largest and nicest beach in Porto Colom is Cala Marcal, which is located in the southern part of town. The beach is located inside a beautiful bay with rocks on both sides. Here the fine-grained sand beach is well protected against waves and undercurrents.
The beach has all the usual facilities, such as sun lounges, sunshades, showers and toilets. During the high season, the beach is also supervised by a lifeguard.
Visitors coming by car will be able to park in the streets just south of the beach. Here you will also find a supermarket where you can buy all you need for a day at the beach.
The beach has a small playground for the youngest children. For the older children there is plenty of room for playing and ball games. The water deepens slowly and waves are rare. So it is, basically, a perfect beach for children.
Porto Colom has the largest natural harbour in Mallorca and it has many interesting places for divers. In the many diving schools in town, beginners can get a diving certificate, whereas more experienced divers can go on diving trips to see ship wrecks, underwater caves etc.
At the beach, it is possible to rent water bikes and the snorkelling conditions along the rocks are perfect.
There are several cafés and restaurants on the right side of the beach. From here, there is a good view of the beach and the lovely bay. There is also a large beach bar on the beach.
Porto Colom holiday resort
Porto Colom is a nice and quiet town, which does not attract too many tourists. This can be seen by the many ordinary shops in town, including a large supermarket and a pharmacy.
Most of the hotels in town are medium-sized family hotels with peace and quiet like the rest of the town. This also applies to the apartment hotel Mallorca Portomar, which has a spectacular sea view.
The evenings can be spent near the harbour or the town square where there are different bars, cafés and restaurants. The best restaurant in town, Sa Llotja, is located close to the harbour. During the last weekend in June, the restaurant competes against the other restaurants in town in the competition Fira Gastronomica d’Es Pop with focus on squid.
Another major event is the TriStar Mallorca Triathlon where you can enrol for the official distance or a shorter distance. This event takes place every year in April.
Porto Colom map
As the satellite photo shows, the beach Cala Marcal is located a bit south of the town, but a walk to this beach is definitely worthwhile. The harbour is located further to the north.
