Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca is the capital of Mallorca. The name goes back more than 2000 years, when Mallorca was conquered by Quintus Caecilius Metullus. He founded the city of Palmaria Palmensis, later becoming Palma as the city is known is Catalan.

With a little more than 400,000 inhabitants, Palma de Mallorca isn’t a real ‘big city’. For an extended weekend trip, however, the city has plenty to offer between its historical city centre, shopping streets, and attractions. If the weather is heating up, you can head to one of Palma de Mallorca’s wonderful beaches. The closest is the lengthy C’an Pere Antoni, and a little further out, you’ll find the more child-friendly Ciutat Jardi.

Passeig del Born

The city’s shopping streets, such as Passeig del Born (photo above) and Avenida de Jaime III, are home to Spanish and international fashion houses alike, while the smaller streets offer a selection of small niche shops, so there’s something for everyone. The same goes for the restaurants dotted around town, offering a selection of classic Spanish tapas and food from all corners of the world. Marc Fosh and Adrián Quetglas each have a Michelin star.

The biggest attraction in Palma de Mallorca is the Gothic cathedral, Le Seu, which is located in the historical city centre. The history of the impressive cathedral stretches back 700-800 years, and kings Jaume II and Jaume III are both buried in the mausoleum. The historical city centre itself is incredibly interesting to explore, and the 31 churches within the city limits attest to the size of the area.

The nearby area of Cala Major is home to the Joan Miro museum (photo above). The famous painter spent many years living in Cala Major, and his house has become part of the museum. For families with children, one of the two large waterparks might be a more interesting option, and if the weather isn’t cooperating, the Palma Aquarium is a good indoor activity.
